Traditional Chinese medicine: potential approaches from modern dynamical complexity theories
Yan Ma,Kehua Zhou,Jing Fan,Shuchen Sun
Frontiers of Medicine 2016, Volume 10, Issue 1, Pages 28-32 doi: 10.1007/s11684-016-0434-2
Despite the widespread use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in clinical settings, proving its effectiveness via scientific trials is still a challenge. TCM views the human body as a complex dynamical system, and focuses on the balance of the human body, both internally and with its external environment. Such fundamental concepts require investigations using system-level quantification approaches, which are beyond conventional reductionism. Only methods that quantify dynamical complexity can bring new insights into the evaluation of TCM. In a previous article, we briefly introduced the potential value of Multiscale Entropy (MSE) analysis in TCM. This article aims to explain the existing challenges in TCM quantification, to introduce the consistency of dynamical complexity theories and TCM theories, and to inspire future system-level research on health and disease.

The polar regions are located in the north and south ends on the earth, which are the key areas of global change research. To understand global change, especially the global climate change, it is needed to research on polar atmosphere. Chinese Arctic and Antarctic of scientific investigation started in 80s and 90s of last century. As a national action, by the end of 2011, 28 times Antarctic expeditions and 8 times Antarctic inland expeditions, and 4 time Arctic expeditions were organized. 3 Antarctic bases (Great Wall, Zhongshan and Kunlun) and 1 Arctic base (Yellow River) and 6 automatic weather stations were established. Formed by the manual weather station, automatic weather station and weather observation on the “Xuelong” icebreaker vessel as the main platform of the polar expedition of hardware support system. Chinese polar atmospheric science observation system is gradually formed including the meteorological operational observation and short term investigation study. Chinese polar meteorological expedition and research work has made great progress by the efforts near 30 years.

Strategic Study of CAE 2003, Volume 5, Issue 1, Pages 1-5
Since the reform and opening-up, ophthalmic resources have rapidly developed in China. On the basis of latest data, this article mainly introduces the present clinical and experimental studies in China on common blinding eye diseases of cataract, cornea, refractive error, vitreous & retina and glaucoma. Great progress has been made in clinical diagnosis and treatment with state-of-the-art ophthalmic equipment and internationally renowned experts in part of cities. However, the difference in overall ophthalmic level between China and developed countries is still pronounced. Main facilities are totally dependent upon importation from abroad. Experimental eye research is facing challenges as well. It requires more policy and financial supports to realize great breakthrough in this frontier.
